Jackson Industry Over The Years

People who live on Jackson MS real estate live in a city rich in history, a pivotal place in the development of the United States. An advantageous location means that the city has always been a big player in events on the national stage, and that includes the development of America as an industrial giant. A good work ethic and the ability to sense opportunity that is trade mark Canadian and American have allowed the city to prosper over the years.

That prosperity began when Jackson was just a frontier town located on the Natchez Trace trade route. It was an important destination for furs from the interior on their way to the large markets in Europe and Asia. The fur trade, lacking as it was in modern conveniences such as the automatic strapping machine, employed many people in the Jackson area at this time.

During the Civil War, the importance of Jackson grew as it became the main manufacturing center for the Confederate States of America. It was in Jackson that the main supplies of the Confederate Army, from uniforms to boots, rifles and ammo, were produced. Factories aired out only by simple wire duct windows, and of course manned by African American slave labor throughout the day, were the backbones of Confederate victories until Jackson fell towards the end of the war.

During the Great Depression, Jackson was one of the few cities to prosper. While outlying farmers still produced bumper cotton crops, they also discovered large reserves of natural gas in the fields on the outskirts of the city on all sides. The exploitation of those fields continues today, as pneumatic conveying systems and other technology is used to make the harvest of this resource more efficient.

Today, many of Jackson's traditional industrial markets continue to survive and to prosper. The city is still a major producer of a large variety of food goods and other agricultural supplies, including cotton used in various domestic products.

Traditional fields are not the only industrial source from which the wealth of Jackson is derived. Electronic circuit design is put to good use in a wide variety of goods manufactured in the city. Many of the products sold at stores such as RadioShack and Best Buy have their components designed and built in Jackson, which is also a major player in the machinery business.
