Education Alternatives in Jackson, Mississippi

Most of the schools in the Jackson area are under the Jackson Public Schools District, which consists of 38 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, 9 high schools, and 2 special schools. The US Department of Education recently announced the award of a $1,447,776 five-year grant to this district to enhance and promote the recruitment and retention of highly qualified teachers in the high need subject areas of mathematics, science and special education. Increased recruitment will focus on the establishment of new technologies, processes and alternate route opportunities. Retention will focus on a strong mentoring program for new teachers and additional coursework and experiences to support them. JPS is the only district in Mississippi and one of only 41 nationally to receive this grant.

Jackson is also home to 35 private schools of varying grade ranges, of which 7 cover the full range of grades from pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or grade 1 to grade 12, and 6 are pre-kindergarten to kindergarten facilities. A full list of these private schools can be found here

After secondary school, Jackson still has plenty to offer. As well as being home to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson State University and Mississippi College, Jackson holds two campuses of Hinds Community College. Other higher education opportunities include Tougaloo College, Belhaven College, Millsaps College, Holmes Community College and the Reformed Theological Seminary.
